1.The leaven...

The Leaven of the Pharisees and Sadducees

© B. Keith Chadwell, February, 2009

This is the first of a series of studies on 2nd Thessalonians 2:

As the studies are posted on www.thekingdomisathand.net they will be indexed, archived and may be accessed from the teachings page.

The truth is the truth, no matter what we believe.  However, as the Spirit of God opens the eyes of our understanding in these days, we may discover we have been stumbling over obstacles to the truth in the scriptures that were not targeted for true Christians.  The “strong delusion” described in 2nd Thessalonians 2:11, is clearly such a mystery obstacle

It is clear that this mysterious obstacle, in 2nd Thessalonians 2:11, is an obstacle sent by God to those who would not receive the love of the truth.  Its purpose was to create a great delusion in those who reject the truth.  This delusion or obstacle was sent by God so as to cause rebellious unbelievers to believe a lie and therefore they would be unable to see the truth.  However, sadly, many true Christians have stumbled over this type of obstacle down through Church history as well and… without excuse.  Because we can’t say we did not have ample warning, as we will soon see.

As true Christians, His truth is ours by promise and rightful inheritance:

Joh 8:31-32  Then said Jesus to those Jews which believed on him, If ye continue in my word, then are ye my disciples indeed; And (then) ye shall know the truth and the truth shall make you free.

However, like many of the promises of God to his children, there are

conditions to appropriation which the Church, in some cases,

has obviously missed.

The children of Israel had the same basic problem with appropriating

Gods promises because they did not heed Gods warnings either

and… with similar consequences.  They fell away from the truth,

and accepted false doctrine, in spite of Gods warnings.  As a result,

they were denied full and complete access to the promises of God.

Their history is one of returning, renewal, revival and then falling

away, again and again, even unto the day of Christ’s revealing to

them.  This also sounds like the history of the Church.  This is history

repeating itself.

Ecc 1:9  The thing that hath been, it is that which shall be; and that which is

done is that which shall be done: and there is no new thing under the sun.

Luk 21:8  And he said, Take heed that ye be not deceived: for many shall come in my name, saying, I am Christ; and the time draweth near: go ye not therefore after them.

Or from Matthew’s gospel;

Mat 24:5  For many shall come in my name, saying, I am Christ; and shall deceive many.

Because there are some strange interpretations out there regarding Luke 21:8 , Matthew 24:5 and the parallel scripture in  Mark, clarification is in order before we go on:

I believe the above scriptures should be interpreted something like this;

Take heed, for many (teachers) shall come saying, “I am Christ” (that Jesus truly is; “the Christ”) and just because some that will come (may be believers) and say;” I am the Christ”, they still will deceive many (with false teaching), And this will begin to happen soon, therefore don’t follow after them (or their teachings).”

Soon after Jesus spoke these words, came the greatest dividing of time the world has ever acknowledged; B.C. + A.D..  This event triggered the advent of Christian teachers (of all kinds) who started taking their versions of the gospel to the nations.  As an aside; Secular folks have recently twisted the B.C. (Before Christ) into B.C.E. (Before the Current Era) but that doesn’t change the truth of its origins.

Judging from the general acceptance of rampant error, the

multitudes of doctrinal divisions and the resulting immaturity of the

Church, I can only conclude; the Church has not been that careful

about “taking heed”.  The fruit of “taking heed” and being

carful is generally not that visible in today’s Church.

Mat 7:20  Wherefore by their fruits ye shall know them.

We truly need to “take heed”.  Biblical teachings that have been

developed by anyone using the carnal mind, will generate

divided opinions, controversy and disunity, regarding all

of the biblical mysteries deliberately hidden by God in the scriptures.

The truth will be challenged, also, by the carnal mind and will also

create division.  Flesh vs Spirit.  It is all out warfare in the spirit.

However, ultimately, the truth will reign, because our carnal mind/

flesh and blood, will not be allowed to usurp Gods government or

kingdom or share in the glory that is to be revealed in us.  Nor can it

sit forever on the throne that is reserved for God within His temple,

which we are.

2Co 10:3  For though we walk in the flesh, we do not war after the flesh:

2Co 10:4  (For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal, but mighty through God to the pulling down of strong holds;)

2Co 10:5  Casting down imaginations, and every high thing that exalteth itself against the knowledge of God, (the truth) and bringing into captivity every thought to the obedience of Christ;

2Co 10:6  And having in a readiness to revenge all disobedience, when your obedience is fulfilled.

Any questions should, first, be submitted to the Lord, (bringing into

captivity every thought to the obedience of Christ;) for it is He who

purposed to hide the truth of all biblical mysteries in order to serve

His good purposes.  And, it is Him also, who reveals them to whom

He chooses, all in His good time.

Should our hearts not burn within us when we hear the truth?

The witness of the Spirit is beyond compare, and more valuable than

gold and silver.

Luk 24:32  And they said one to another, Did not our heart burn within us, while he talked with us by the way, and while he opened to us the scriptures?

Psa 119:72  The law of thy mouth is better unto me than thousands of gold and silver.

Pro 23:23  Buy the truth, and sell it not; also wisdom, and instruction, and understanding.

Mar 4:11 And he said unto them, Unto you it is given to know the mystery of the kingdom of God: but unto them that are without, all these things are done in parables:

I do not propose to have all the answers to the questions that will be raised in any of my teachings.  Rather, I am suggesting that we, as Christians, with God’s help and direction, should purpose to expose, tear down and re-build anything that we may have been taught that has been leavened by the doctrine of the Pharisees and of the Sadducees and proffered by the flesh.  And, we must not be as arrogant and presumptuous so as to believe there could be nothing in us of that nature.

Mat 18:4 Whosoever therefore shall humble himself as this little child, the same is greatest in the kingdom of heaven.

1Pe 5:6 Humble yourselves therefore under the mighty hand of God, that he may exalt you in due time:

Jer 1:10 See, I have this day set thee over the nations and over the kingdoms, to root out, and to pull down, and to destroy, and to throw down, to build, and to plant.

Jesus also gave this “specific” warning to his followers;

Mat 16:6Take heed and beware of the Leaven of the Pharisees and of the

Sadducees”.

Leaven or as Jesus’ followers learned by revelation as Jesus spoke

this parable to them, is understood spiritually to mean doctrine.

The doctrine of the Pharisees and Sadducees was warned against by

Jesus, and therefore, on good authority, we can safely say it is “false

doctrine”.  It is false doctrine that will permeate the truth.

Think about trying to separate the tiny bit of leaven that is in a big

batch of bread dough after it is ready to bake.  Now we get some idea

of the danger to the truth that leavened doctrine would create if

allowed to come in.  How then do we separate the leavened doctrine

from the truth once it is in us.  It can only be revealed and

destoyed by and through the work of the Holy Spirit.

We certainly understand that belief of false doctrine is in fact an

obstacle which must be removed from within us in order to be able

to see, believe and apply the truth.

Therefore we start with the mystery or parable of leaven or false

doctrine and conclude that the leaven  Jesus warned his followers

about would be an obstacle.  An obstacle for Jesus’ followers to

learning and applying the truth, if… they were not carful and “take

heed” of His warnings.

Mat 16:v6Take heed and beware of the Leaven of the Pharisees and of the

Sadducees”.

Luk 11:35  Take heed therefore that the light which is in thee be not darkness.

Luk 21:8  And he said, Take heed that ye be not deceived:………

The Pharisees of 30 A.D. were legalists, believing that the disposition

of the heart was less vital than the outward act.  Lawyers and

exposition of the law grew to be extremely important, resulting in

inherited precepts and interpretations with binding force, beyond the

law of Moses.

The Sadducees, on the other hand, had yielded more to Greek

influence and had adopted the principles of the Aristotelian

philosophy and refused to accept any doctrine which they could not

prove by pure reason.

It seems most Pharisees and Sadducees back then thought;  physical

or “literal”.  The carnal mind/flesh & blood, is not capable of

understanding the spiritual mysteries deliberately hidden by God

in natural types, metaphors and parables in the bible.

Mar 4:11 And he said unto them, Unto you it is given to know the mystery of the kingdom of God: but unto them that are without, all these things are done in parables:

Obstacles or mysteries of God are targeted for those “who are without” or those who refuse to believe (unbelievers).  However, Christians, by not heeding the warnings by Jesus, Paul and old testament lessons about this type of error, stumble over the same obstacles.  Even from the beginning, some folks back in church history, obviously, stumbled over this type of obstacle, fell for the lies and we have all been reaping the consequences to one degree or another.

By now, this “leaven” has permeated much of our traditional church eschatology and has become a part of a large, complex, multi headed, doctrinal beast.

We should be well aware by now; Anyone, who tries to understand the great mysteries of God with the carnal mind/the flesh, rather than by the revelation of the Spirit will fail.

The light of Christ in these days is arising on his people like;

“the morning sun that spreads upon the mountains”.

The morning light of the day of Christ is breaking on us, revealing that it is “Christ in us” that was purposed by God to be “the hope of glory” or the method to glorify the Father again, as Jesus did.   While this light is arising on us, at the same time the world is still covered with gross darkness.

Joh 12:28  Father, glorify thy name. Then came there a voice from heaven, saying, I have both glorified it, and will glorify it again.

2Th 2:2  That ye be not soon shaken in mind, or be troubled, neither by spirit, nor by word, nor by letter as from us, as that the day of Christ is at hand.

2Th 2:3  Let no man deceive you by any means: for that day shall not come, except there come a falling away first, and that man of sin be revealed, the son of perdition;

Isa 60:1  Arise, shine; for thy light is come, and the glory of the LORD is risen upon thee.

Isa 60:2  For, behold, the darkness shall cover the earth, and gross darkness the people: but the LORD shall arise upon thee, and his glory shall be seen upon thee.

Isa 60:3  And the Gentiles shall come to thy light, and kings to the brightness of thy rising.

Joe 2:1-2  Blow ye the trumpet in Zion, and sound an alarm in my holy mountain: let all the inhabitants of the land tremble: for the day of the LORD cometh, for it is nigh at hand; A day of darkness and of gloominess, a day of clouds and of thick darkness, as the morning spread upon the mountains: a great people and a strong; there hath not been ever the like, neither shall be any more after it, even to the years of many generations.

Hab 1:5  Behold ye among the heathen, and regard, and wonder marvellously: for I will work a work in your days, which ye will not believe, though it be told you.

Joe 1:13-15  Gird yourselves, and lament, ye priests: howl, ye ministers of the altar: come, lie all night in sackcloth, ye ministers of my God: for the meat offering and the drink  offering is withholden from the house of your God.

Sanctify ye a fast, call a solemn assembly, gather the elders and all the inhabitants of the land into the house of the LORD your God, and cry unto the LORD,

Alas for the day! for the day of the LORD is at hand, and as a destruction from the Almighty shall it come.

I pray, today, as I prepare to post this teaching:

Lord, create in me a clean heart, for I can not, by the efforts of my own flesh and from an evil heart, obey your laws.  I commit this to you and trust, by faith that you will, in fact, bring to pass the full manifestation of your righteousness through me in your good time and for your glory.

Lord, reveal all of the mysterious obstacles and self centered darkness which prevents or hinders your work in me. And, which I (my flesh) through the deceitfulness and stubborn self rule of my desperately wicked heart, have not acknowledged and have not submitted to be crucified with you.

Lord, reveal and consume with the spirit of your mouth, those things of dark motivations which sit in the place where you should sit and rule   within me.

Lord, destroy, with the brightness of your coming, the darkness in my heart and then may your light arise to full noonday within me, with no shadow of turning.

I ask this Father, in Jesus name, in order then; that my new light and life may shine before men, that they will see my good works and then glorify you, even as Jesus did.  For it is your Kingdom and your power, and therefore your glory, forever and ever.

Oh Lord, amen and amen and amen.

Psa 37:5  Commit thy way unto the LORD; trust also in him; and he shall bring it to pass.

Psa 37:6 And he shall bring forth thy righteousness as the light, and thy judgment as the noonday.

Act 14:22 Confirming the souls of the disciples, and exhorting them to continue in the faith, and that we must through much tribulation enter into the kingdom of God. (which is within you)

Rom 8:18 For I reckon that the sufferings of this present time are not worthy to be compared with the glory which shall be revealed in us.

Habakkuk 3:3-4 God came from the South, and the Holy One from mount Paran. The heavens were covered with the brightness of His glory; and the earth was full of His praise. And His brightness was as the light in the city which His hands had established shall He store His power. (Peshitta text)

Heb 11:10 For he looked for a city which hath foundations, whose builder

and maker is God.

Mat 5:14 Ye are the light of the world. A city that is set on an hill cannot be hid.

Mat 5:16 Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven.

Joh 3:21  But he that doeth truth cometh to the light, that his deeds may be made manifest, that they are wrought in God.

Joh 8:12 Then spake Jesus again unto them, saying, I am the light of the world: he that followeth me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life.

John 8:32  And ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.

John 17:17 sanctify them through thy truth: thy word is truth.

Let Him who hath an ear hear

2. The brightness of His coming

“The brightness of His Coming”

This is the 2nd in a series of studies on 2nd Thessalonians 2:

As the studies are posted on www.thekingdomisathand.net They will be indexed, archived and may be accessed from the teachings page.  It will be important to read the 1st in this series prior to starting part 2, below.

If we can set aside what our leavened religious traditions have taught us, we may begin to see through to the truth.  However, be forewarned; the traditions of men are powerful and can be powerfully deceptive.

Take a look at these subject scriptures for starters:

2nd Thessalonians 2:

2Th 2:1 now we beseech you, brethren, by the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ, and by our gathering together unto him,

2Th 2:2 That ye be not soon shaken in mind, or be troubled, neither by spirit, nor by word, nor by letter as from us, as that the day of Christ is at hand.

2Th 2:3 Let no man deceive you by any means: for that day shall not come, except there come a falling away first, and that man of sin be revealed, the son of perdition;

2Th 2:4 Who opposeth and exalteth himself above all that is called God, or that is worshipped; so that he as God sitteth in the temple of God, shewing himself that he is God.

2Th 2:5  Remember ye not, that, when I was yet with you, I told you these things?

2Th 2:6  And now ye know what withholdeth that he might be revealed in his time.

V6 (Peshitta text; …”And (so) now you know what has prevented him from being revealed in his time”.)

2Th 2:7  For the mystery of iniquity doth already work: only he who now letteth will let, until he be taken out of the way.

V7 (Peshitta text: “For the mystery of iniquity is already at work: until he who now is the obstacle is taken out of the way.”)

2Th 2:8  And then shall that Wicked be revealed, whom the Lord shall consume with the spirit of his mouth, and shall destroy with the brightness of his coming:

2Th 2:9  Even him, whose coming is after the working of Satan with all power and signs and lying wonders,

2Th 2:10  And with all deceivableness of unrighteousness in them that perish; because they received not the love of the truth, that they might be saved.

2Th 2:11  And for this cause God shall send them strong delusion, that they should believe a lie:

2Th 2:12  That they all might be damned who believed not the truth, but had pleasure in unrighteousness.

OK, now look again at the two verses that follow;

(2nd Thessalonians 2:8 & 9)

V8: "And then shall that wicked be revealed, whom the Lord shall consume with the spirit of His mouth, and shall destroy with the brightness of His coming (G3952)."

v9: “Even him, whose coming (G3952) is after (G2596) the working of Satan with all power and signs and lying wonders...”

Here comes part of the  camouflage…..

In verse 9 above; the… "Even him"…; has been offered as an: “anti-Christ”, by carnal tradition and now by many main stream eschatology teachers.

Look very carefully, without bias or pre-condition; in verse 9, above, the “him(Even him whose coming…) is NOT an “anti-Christ” but is, in fact; Him”(the Lord ) who destroys “him("that wicked") with “the brightness of His coming”?

Look at the Greek definition of “coming”:

V9..."Even him whose coming (G2952)"  G3952 παρουσία parousiapar-oo-see'-ah  From the present participle of G3918; a being near, that is, advent (often, return; specifically of Christ to punish Jerusalem, or finally the wicked); (by implication) physical aspect: - coming, presence.

"Coming" in verse 9, being the same Greek word that was used for the

Lord's "coming" or presence in verse 8.

Now consider the context of verse 8 through verse 12 and look again at the

Greek definitions of the words “after” as used in verse 9;

2 Thessalonians 2: v9:  Even him (Him), whose coming is after (G2596; "concerning, pertaining to, touching") the working of satan.....”

The HIM” in v9 would be better understood, in context, to mean;

v9 "Even Him, (the Lord) whose coming is (pertaining to and because of the) working of Satan with all power and signs and lying wonders, and with all deceivableness of unrighteousness in them that perish; because they received not the love of the truth, that they might be saved.”

Even if we identify this camouflage, it may seem to be just a careless, but basically harmless, diversion from the truth.   However, if we could follow its effect, we would see that this error, like leaven, has permeated some Christian eschatology and contributed to the growth of a multi headed doctrinal beast.

Now consider the context of verse 8 through verse 12 and look again at the

Greek definitions of the word “wicked” as used in verse 9;

"wicked"  : G3551; lawless, that is, (negatively) not subject to (the Jewish) law; (by implication a Gentile), or (positively) wicked: - without law, lawless, transgressor, unlawful, wicked.

Verses 8 & 9 talk of; "that wicked" and "the working of satan".  Therefore indicating Satan works through; “that wicked” which would be revealed, consumed and destroyed, by the Spirit of His mouth and the brightness of His coming.

What kind of weapon is “the spirit of His mouth” ?

Eph 6:17  And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God:

Speaking of swords….. A weapon of our spiritual warefare (the sword) is not to fight the devil in our outer carnal world.  We see how this sword is to be used in Hebrews chapter 4: (specificly in verses 12-13).  It is not a carnal weapon but rather a Spiritual weapon to slice into the dark recesses of our wicked hearts ….to divide our soul and spirit, to separate once again as he did at the creation, the darkness from the light.  All this is done down in our flesh even unto the joints and marrow of the darkest recesses of our flesh.  This is in order to bare us naked in His sight and thereby expose the darkness within us to the light or brightness of His coming.

As darkness is exposed to light, it is consumed.

Heb 4:12  For the word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any two edged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.

Heb 4:13  Neither is there any creature that is not manifest in his sight: but all things are naked and opened unto the eyes of him with whom we have to do.

This is His work within us, we are to just “REST”…..and this will be accomplished through the word of God……which is the Sword of the Spirit. (Eph. 6:17)

2Th 2:8  And then shall that Wicked be revealed, whom the Lord shall consume with the spirit of his mouth, and shall destroy with the brightness of his coming:

So how is this sword to be wielded by God, as the “Spirit of His

Mouth”?

Ephesians 6:  again has a clue:

Eph 6:17  And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God:

Eph 6:18  Praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit, and watching thereunto with all perseverance and supplication for all saints;

If we did not divide verse 17 and 18 with verse references as above,

lets look at verse 17 and 18 as one complete thought without changing

punctuation or adding any comments.

And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which

is the word of God: Praying always with all prayer and supplication in

the Spirit, and watching thereunto with all perseverance and

supplication for all saints;

Would we not see that the sword of the Spirit is to be wielded with

the mouth.  Therefore as we yield our mouth to the Holy Spirit and

let Him pray “in accordance with the will of God” through us, is

not this “sword” or weapon “the Spirit of HIS mouth”?

Rom 8:26  Likewise the Spirit also helpeth our infirmities: for we know not what we should pray for as we ought: but the Spirit itself maketh intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered.

Rom 8:27  And he that searcheth the hearts knoweth what is the mind of the Spirit, because he maketh intercession for the saints according to the will of God.

Isa 28:11-12  For with stammering lips and another tongue will he speak to this people. To whom he said, This is the rest wherewith ye may cause the weary to rest; and this is the refreshing: yet they would not hear.

Psa 81:8  Hear, O my people, and I will testify unto thee: O Israel, if thou wilt hearken unto me;

Psa 81:9  There shall no strange god be in thee; neither shalt thou worship any strange god.

Psa 81:10  I am the LORD thy God, which brought thee out of the land of Egypt: open thy mouth wide, and I will fill it.

Psa 81:11  But my people would not hearken to my voice; and Israel would none of me.

Psa 81:12  So I gave them up unto their own hearts' lust: and they walked in their own counsels.

Psa 81:13  Oh that my people had hearkened unto me, and Israel had walked in my ways!

Psa 81:14  I should soon have subdued their enemies, and turned my hand against their adversaries.

Psa 81:15  The haters of the LORD should have submitted themselves unto him: but their time should have endured for ever.

Psa 81:16  He should have fed them also with the finest of the wheat: and with honey out of the rock should I have satisfied thee.

2Th 2:8  And then shall that Wicked be revealed, whom the Lord shall consume with the spirit of his mouth, and shall destroy with the brightness of his coming:

Let Him who hath an ear hear

2Th 2:13  But we are bound to give thanks alway to God for you, brethren beloved of the Lord, because God hath from the beginning chosen you to salvation through sanctification of the Spirit and belief of the truth:

2Th 2:14  Whereunto he called you by our gospel, to the obtaining of the glory of our Lord Jesus Christ.

2Th 2:15  Therefore, brethren, stand fast, and hold the traditions which ye have been taught, whether by word, or our epistle.

2Th 2:16  Now our Lord Jesus Christ himself, and God, even our Father, which hath loved us, and hath given us everlasting consolation and good hope through grace,

2Th 2:17  Comfort your hearts, and stablish you in every good word and work.

3. The mystery of iniquity

The Mystery of Iniquity

© B. Keith Chadwell, February, 2009

This is the third of a series of studies on 2nd Thessalonians 2:

As the studies are posted on www.thekingdomisathand.net they will be indexed, archived and may be accessed from the teachings page. It is important that you study part 1 and 2 before starting part 3, below.

Let’s go on with our series of studies in 2nd Thessalonians 2:

By direct reference we can associate “that wicked” in verse 8 with

that man of sin” in verse 3.

2Th 2:3 Let no man deceive you by any means: for that day shall

not come, except there come a falling away first, and that man

of sin be revealed, (as) the son of perdition; G684

G684  Perdition

From a presumed derivative of G622; ruin or loss (physical, spiritual or eternal): - damnable (-nation), destruction, die, perdition, X perish, pernicious ways, waste.

Of course, the son of perdition” is identified in 2 Thes. 2:3 as; “that

man of sin”, and is used as a base support scripture for some traditional teachings on the anti-Christ being a Literal man who is to; (V3) “be revealed”, (v8) consumed by the Spirit of His mouth”; “destroyed by the brightness of His coming” and purported  by some traditions to be (v9) “coming”.

Ok… so now we might ask; how canthat (literal) man of sin”, “that

Wicked (literal man)  leterally ,“sit in the temple of God showing himself

that he is God?” (2nd Thes. 2:3)

2Th 2:7 For the mystery of iniquity doth already work:….

Anything the bible calls a “mystery” will certainly require the attention of Christians with ears to hear in order for it to be revealed.    Strictly Literal interpretations should immediately raise some red flags.

In 2Th 2:7 we are given a heads up by the bible itself, of the mystery” content.

“That man of sin”, sitting in a literal temple of God?…not likely, since we have already been told; this is a spiritual mystery. What then?

Here is a clue:

Rev 2:9  I know thy works, and tribulation, and poverty, (but thou art rich) and I know the blasphemy of them which say they are Jews, and are not, but are the synagogue of Satan.

If (flesh and blood) men are referenced by Jesus as a “synagogue

of Satan…as above, then by direct contrast; Other men (flesh and

blood men) could be referenced as; a temple of God and they are:

1Co 6:19  What? know ye not that your body is the temple of the Holy Ghost which is in you, which ye have of God, and ye are not your own?

Remember; the Kings-dominion is within you.   Do not look for it

here or there (Luke 17:21).  By extension, that should place His throne

or place where He sits; within you also, but obviously not literally.

I can’t help but think about; where my flesh would like to

sit (as it were) in this scheme of things.  Any bets?

2Th 2:4 “Who opposeth and exalteth himself above all that is called God…”

Would I (my flesh) exalt myself and oppose God’s rule?  I can

speak from past experience…….   I (my flesh) would love to exalt

myself and would love not to be ruled by God or anything else.

Ok, so who is the “he who now letteth” that is the obstacle and just

what is the obstacle?

Letteth;  From G2596 and G2192; to hold down (fast), in various applications (literally or figuratively): - have, hold (fast), keep (in memory), let, X make toward, possess, retain, seize on, stay, take, withhold.

2Th 2:7 For the mystery of iniquity doth already work: only he who now letteth will let, until he be taken out of the way.

Peshitta text: 2Th 2:7  “For  the mystery of iniquity is already at work: until he who now is the obstacle is taken out of the way.”

What happens when the obstacle is removed?

Verse 7 indicates; that would be the end of the Mystery of iniquity.

And, by extension, the removal of the obstacle would seem to facilitate the revelation of this “mystery of iniquity”.

Could God be a part of setting up or authorizing this obstacle in the first place?

“He who now is the obstacle” or “He who now letteth …is said to be …“TAKEN out of the way.” By extension, if he is to be “TAKEN out…” we might wonder if the one who will “take him out…” might have been the same one to “SEND him in, in the first place?

2Th 2:10 And with all deceivableness of unrighteousness in them that perish; because they received not the love of the truth, that they might be saved.

2Th 2:11 And for this cause God shall send them strong delusion, that they should believe a lie:

2Th 2:12 That they all might be damned who believed not the truth, but had pleasure in unrighteousness.

In Verse 7:, was the;he who is now the obstacle” sent, by God, as

described in verse 11, above?

Again, in verse 7, we see that “he who is now the obstacle”, will be

removed to facilitate the revelation of “the mystery of iniquity”.

Could it be that a messenger of Satan, was sent by God with a strong dilusion and is in fact the; “he who is now the obstacle”?

Did not God send or authorize the strong delusion to make those that received not the love of the truth so that they should believe a lie (V11 above)?

A strong delusion could also legitimately be called an obstacle to the truth for sure, because the antonym for delusion is reality or truth. (delusion vs truth)

There is biblical basis for God sending a “messenger of Satan” to serve His purposes in 2Corinthians 12:7-10.

Look again at 2nd Th 2:7:

V7 (Peshitta text: “For the mystery of iniquity is already at work: until he who now is the obstacle is taken out of the way.”)

So, ifhe who now is the obstaclewas a messenger of Satan sent by

God with a strong delusion, or obstacle to the truth   ……… how was it

to be applied or perpetrated, in fact?

Here from Galations 5:7-9 is a clue;

Ye did run well; who did hinder you that ye should not obey the truth?

This persuasion cometh not of him that calleth you.

A little leaven leaveneth the whole lump.

In this case is was not God that sent the hindrance or obstacle but

perhaps some false teacher for which they had ample warning

beforehand.

Jesus said to his followers; Mat 16:6  Take heed and beware of the

leaven of the Pharisees and of the Sadducees.”…

Mat 16:12  Then understood they how that he bade them not beware of the

leaven of bread, but of the doctrine of the Pharisees and of the

Sadducees. (review part 1 or this study for context & continuity)

Or, in other words; any doctrine which proposes literal or carnal

minded, fleshly interpretations for things purposed by God to be

hidden which can only be revealed by and through His Holy Spirit.

The carnal mind always wants to interpret spiritual mysteries

literally. It is a war…..Flesh vs Spirit.

The obstacle in 2Thes. 2: 7, could be a spirit of deception, sent by God

(V11)  working through people who will not accept the truth in order

that they would believe a lie.

And, would not this spirit of deception even work through  Christians who have not taken heed to Jesus warning to his followers regarding “the leaven (or doctrine) of the Pharisees and of the

Sadducees” ?

Carnal flesh, trying to solve “the mystery’s of God”…?

How presumptuous we are.  Do we think like God?  Are not His ways

higher than ours?  Let God be God… when he hides something,

be assured, it will remain hidden until He chooses to reveal it.

And then, it will be revealed only in His time and only to whom He

chooses to reveal it and only to serve His purposes at HIS good

pleasure.

Let Him who hath an ear hear

Journey on……narrow is the way.

4. The mystery of Godliness

The mystery of Godliness

 © B. Keith Chadwell, February, 2009

This is the 4th and final of a series of studies on 2nd Thessalonians 2:

As the studies are posted on www.thekingdomisathand.net They will be indexed, archived and may be accessed from the teachings page. It will be important to read part 1, 2 and 3 before starting part 4, below.

So, let’s begin part 4 of our 2nd Thessalonians 2: study.

V7 (Peshitta text:) For the mystery of iniquity is already at work: until he who now is the obstacle is taken out of the way.

The mystery of iniquityin 2nd Thes. 2:7, above, should be compared and considered in the same light as the “The mystery of godliness” in 1st Timothy 3:16 or the mystery of Christ in Ephesians 3:4, and is further amplified by Col 1: 27; “Christ in you, the hope of glory.”

1 Timothy 3:16 And without controversy great is the mystery of godliness: God was manifest in the flesh, justified in the Spirit, seen of angels, preached unto the Gentiles, believed on in the world, received up into glory

Ephesians 3;4 Whereby, when ye read, ye may understand my knowledge in the mystery of Christ.

Col 1:27 To whom God would make known what is the riches of the glory of this mystery among the Gentiles; which is Christ in you, the hope of glory:

In considering the meaning of “the mystery” either of Godliness, of Christ or of Iniquity, we should see mysteries, by definition as; something hidden which may not readily be revealed; “a secret or mystery”.   For example, Jesus spoke of “the mystery of the Kingdom and always spoke in parables and metaphor’s to keep the mystery hidden (a secret), except for those “with eyes to see and ears to hear”.

Mar 4:11 And he said unto them, Unto you it is given to know the mystery of the kingdom of God: but unto them that are without, all these things are done in parables:

So let us see these mysteries in the same way and ask the Lord to reveal them to us and not just rely on the traditional teachings of men:

The mystery of Godliness and of Christ deals with the manifestation of God in the flesh, the work of Jesus the Christ and the gift to His believers of the Holy Spirit, in order that we might become partakers of His divine nature.

Anti-freeze, by definition, could be anything that would prevent freezing.   By definition, then; “Anti-Christ” could be anything that prevents the perfection and manifestation of Christ in His Church.

Perfection and the manifestation of Christ in the Body of Christ is the goal that God has purposed for us and defined by Paul as; “Christ in us, the hope of glory”.

Eph 4:12  For the perfecting of the saints, for the work of the ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ:

Eph 4:13  Till we all come in the unity of the faith, and of the knowledge of the Son of God, unto a perfect man, unto the measure of the stature of the fulness of Christ:

Incidentally and… I think, not coincidentally, our flesh contains exactly six hundred and sixty six (666) skeletal muscles.

Scripture tells us that “Flesh and blood can not inherit the Kingdom of God, because it (the flesh) is by scriptural definition; Anti or; at war with the Spirit.  The flesh is contrary to the Sprit and unwilling to submit to Gods government, Kingdom (Kings-dominion), or rule of God.  (also see Romans 7: and 8)

1Co 15:50  Now this I say, brethren, that flesh and blood cannot inherit the kingdom of God; neither doth corruption inherit incorruption.

That wicked  (2nd Thessalonians 2:8)

Wicked: G3551; lawless, that is, (negatively) not subject to (the Jewish) law; (by implication a Gentile), or (positively) wicked: - without law, lawless, transgressor, unlawful, wicked.

Our wicked flesh, surely, needs to be submitted to be crucified with

Christ, by our faith in Christ to do that very work, in us. Then,

as we die daily and bring every thought captive to the obedience of

Christ (to conform, submit to the rule of God or come under His

dominion) there will follow;

A daily, progressive, resurrection unto His new life in us, until He is

fully apparent in us.

Col 3:4  When Christ, who is our life, shall appear, then shall ye also appear with him in glory.”

Eph 4:13  Till we all come in the unity of the faith, and of the knowledge of the Son of God, unto a perfect man, unto the measure of the stature of the fulness of Christ:

If we, our fleshly desires and motivations, are crucified (not literally of course) with Him, we are also to be resurrected with Him.  His coming or appearing in us, His light, our new resurrection life, will destroy the dark motivations to sin or… “that wicked” in us. And then His light or his life, will fill us and from the cleaned heart will come forth the manifestations of His righteousness in us.

Tit 3:5  Not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to his mercy he saved us, by the washing of regeneration, and renewing of the Holy Ghost;

Mat 6:33  But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you.

Joh 1:4  In him was life; and the life was the light of men.

Php 2:13  For it is God which worketh in you both to will and to do of his good pleasure.

Luk 6:45  A good man out of the good treasure of his heart bringeth forth that which is good; and an evil man out of the evil treasure of his heart bringeth forth that which is evil: for of the abundance of the heart his mouth speaketh.

Psa 37:5  Commit thy way unto the LORD; trust also in him; and he shall bring it to

pass. v6  And he shall bring forth thy righteousness as the light, and thy judgment

as the noonday.

Verses 9a & 10 of 2nd Thessalonians 2: describes “the working of

Satan" in this manner;

“…the working of Satan with all power and signs and lying wonders, And with all deceivableness of unrighteousness in them that perish; because they received not the love of the truth, that they might be saved.”

This is “ANTI-“ or In direct contrast to certain promises and expectations that true Christians have, which are:

“…the workings of Christ”, with all righteousness in us that live, is because we do receive the love of the truth, that we might be saved!

Yet it does not appear what we shall be.  But, when He comes or appears or is manifest in us, we shall be like Him and see Him as He is.

1Jn 3:2  Beloved, now are we the sons of God, and it doth not yet appear what we shall be: but we know that, when he shall appear, (be fully manifest) we shall be like him; for we shall see him as he is.

1Jn 2:28  And now, little children, abide in him; that, when he shall appear, (be fully manifest) we may have confidence, and not be ashamed before him at his coming.

The real target that the church should be zeroing in on to destroy the works of the devil is Ant-Christ for sure and certain.  That would be the desires and motivations of…OUR FLESH   And then, for us to fully understand that it is not by our works that this destruction will be done, but rather by His work in us.   It is only “the brightness of His coming that will bring us to the final victory.

This whole passage in 2 Thessalonians 2: leaves no wiggle room for anything ANTI-Christ after the Lord shows up (2Th 2:8 ).  This is a total victory picture of; "the day of the Lord" (whatever and whenever that may be).

Co 13:12  For now we see through a glass, darkly; but then face to face: now I know

in part; but then shall I know even as also I am known.
