The inspiration for “His Majesty”:
I was on a week long summer pack trip into the Eagle Cap wilderness, in Eastern Oregon, a few years ago with my long time packing partner, RE Sharp. As we rode along in solitude and silence, enveloped in the majesty of those mountains, I remember musing over a few lines of this poem in my mind.
His Majesty
There’s a place in Eastern Oregon
Where the mountains punched holes in the skies
In the days God told them…”Take root here”
…It’s a land way too small for their size
Yet this land and its mountains are vast
It’s a place where the great eagles fly
Over trails that lead up to treasures…
Hidden lakes, green meadows, blue sky
As God let’s me ride through these mountains
His majesty… they ever proclaim
I never can ride through these mountains
Then return home and still be the same
